Really, any blanket can be a dog blanket! However, if you want to be practical about it, there’s a few factors to consider. A blanket that is machine washable will be worth every penny. Furthermore, a white or light blanket will show much more dirt, and it will be very difficult to make it look clean.

If you have a young dog or a dog who is notorious for chewing or destroying blankets, you’ll want to stay away from anything tempting like tassels, 3D designs or padding. Especially if there’s any chance you’ll be leaving your dog alone in a crate with the blanket.

When considering material, fleece is super soft, easy to clean and will be the cheapest option in most cases. While sherpa looks great for decorating around the house, it can start to look clumpy with dog hair and dirt or after a few wash cycles. So personally, I definitely don’t let my favorite sherpa blanket end up on the dog bed.

While I try to avoid mixing dogs with sherpa material, sherpa is a great choice for making things look decorative so it’s a great choice for the living room or bedroom.
